Interview With Ena Begovic, Creator of One Woman Show Bloody Influencers
Ena Begovic has created an exciting one woman show that looks at the toll being a social media influencer can take on the influencer themself.
Ena Begovic is an incredible young creative. Five years ago she told her family that she was leaving her home country to forge a creative career in London and now her one woman show, Bloody Influencers, is being presented at the Barons Court Theatre in West London.
I spoke with her on 2nd January 2024 as she was preparing for Bloody Influencers to open and she told me about her creative and physical journeys from being an aspiring dancer in Zadar, Croatia to working as an au pair in London in order to finance her theatre studies and then how she went on to create and produce a critically acclaimed one woman show.
Creating new theatre work is difficult. Getting that work produced is even harder but getting both those tasks done in a foreign country and language is an even bigger mountain which Ena Begovic has successfully scaled. She should be applauded for doing this and doing it well!
In our conversation she spoke about Bloody Influencers and how she has taken a different look at social media influencers. Rather than consider the issue in the context of somebody who is influenced, Ena has given her character a different trajectory and story: Lucija Antonija Matic becomes Instagram queen Daisy Woolworth whose every moment is curated and posted. What makes the writer’s viewpoint unique is that Begovic examines how this constant pressure impacts the influencer herself. When I asked if Daisy Woolworth was a product or victim of social media the response was “Both”
But before you assume that Ena’s show is trés serious please be aware that she has a wicked and infectious sense of humour. She offers great insights into the importance of creativity in society and in her own life. I enjoyed chatting with Ena and found myself astounded at her drive to succeed. With young creatives like Ena Begovic we can be sure that the future of theatre is in safe hands!
